For the past five years, the Steps2Work program, a collaboration between Surrey Care Trust, the Department of Work and Pensions, and Woking Borough Council, has been transforming the lives of young people in the Woking area. The program provides unique mentoring and support to help young individuals aged 16-24, including Care Leavers, find employment or pursue further education.
The need for this type of program is clear. While the overall unemployment rate in Woking for individuals 16 and older was 2.9% in 2023, the youth unemployment rate in the area is notably higher than the county average. In March 2024, 3.6% of individuals aged 18 to 24 in Woking were receiving Universal Credit or Jobseeker’s Allowance, compared to 2.5% across Surrey. These figures highlight the critical need for targeted support to help young people find their footing.
A Tailored Approach to Success
Steps2Work goes beyond a one-size-fits-all model. The program provides long-term, flexible support, averaging 12 months, and focuses on a holistic, whole-person approach. The team understands that young people come with a wide range of needs, from low confidence and anxiety to a fear of rejection and a lack of key skills like communication and teamwork.
With the help of experienced staff and dedicated volunteers, the program provides valuable assistance with:
This comprehensive support is designed to build confidence and prepare young people not just for a job, but for a successful and sustainable future.
Making a Tangible Difference
The results of the Steps2Work program speak for themselves. The team has supported almost 600 young people, with 48% successfully transitioning into employment. An additional 24% have gone on to further education or training, and 12% have started volunteering.
Joseph, a program participant, shared his experience, saying:
I got an offer for as a data entry technician and now feel successful and more confident in my ability to have a job.
By investing in our youth, we are investing in the future of our community. Steps2Work is a powerful example of how targeted, person-centred support can make a profound and lasting impact.
