Allotment Awards All round!

Congratulations to our Gateway Allotment team for winning Outstanding from the Surrey in Bloom Awards

We are delighted to have achieved this result with comments such as:

The small group of coordinators and the local volunteers are making a big difference by creating a more accessible outdoor space and by providing activities for less able people to enjoy…this group is innovative, committed to deliver a project, can think outside the box and are passionate about their work.

And especially for scoring 36 out of 40 for Community Participation – working towards things such as:

  • Being inclusive of local people
  • Local ownership and direction
  • Making a difference to local people
  • Involving local people with planning, decision-making, communication & implementation
  • Representative of the local community
  • Getting support (e.g. from local council, grant aid, sponsorship, in-kind aid etc.)
  • Planning for the future
  • Working in partnership with other organisations (i.e. police, community support officers, environmental groups
    etc.

Final comments included:

The coordinators and the local volunteers are using their horticultural skills to encourage people to garden and by doing this they are also improving the wellbeing of the service users. There are many other achievements that should be praised such as the creation
of a pond, a newly designed garden, the creation of buffer zones for wildlife and so on. I am confident that the story is not ending here, and I am looking forward to visiting this community again.

Well done everyone, and a huge thanks to all our volunteers and supporters; we are only able to offer these activities thanks to the generosity of individuals, local companies, and charitable trusts.
