Artists Bring Gateway Community Garden to Life in Vibrant Art Session

We wish to thank North Weald Art Group for their recent visit to Gateway Community Garden in Reigate, where members spent a morning immersed in the colours, textures and atmosphere of our award-winning garden.

The group explored the garden’s borders, vegetable beds and seasonal displays, including the much‑loved squash stack, capturing the environment through thoughtful brushstrokes and individual interpretations of colour and space. Each artist brought a unique perspective, revealing how differently people see the same landscape when given time to slow down, observe and translate nature onto paper.

The artists’ work highlighted the subtle shifts of light across petals, the contrast of bold tones against soft greenery, and the sense of openness and calm that Gateway offers. These artworks not only celebrate the garden’s beauty but also demonstrate the powerful connection between creativity and wellbeing.

Tricia Hughes, North Weald Art Group, said:

We are so grateful to the Gateway Project for welcoming us so warmly to their little haven, the Gateway Garden. There are so many things to inspire an artist there. The plants, vegetables, garden sheds and of course the people too. It has a lovely atmosphere which makes the place a delight to even just sit in, never mind the artwork. We very much look forward to return visits.

Milly O’Ryan, Gateway Community Garden Assistant Manager, said:

Art in the garden is incredibly important to us at SCT. When people draw here, they engage deeply with nature, noticing colour in new ways, exploring space differently, and expressing themselves through movement and brushwork. Creativity supports wellbeing, builds confidence and strengthens community connection. Having the North Weald Art Group with us was inspiring, and we can’t wait to welcome them back.

We believe that art and nature together create a unique environment for reflection, healing and joy. The visit was a wonderful example of how community partnerships can enrich the garden and the people who use it.
