Despite completing 10 GCSEs and a university degree in Social Anthropology, Amelia* struggled with severe social anxiety. She often avoided social interactions and preferred not to engage in conversation. These challenges sometimes led to low moods and made it difficult for her to connect with others.
We partnered Amelia with one of our mentors to focus on building her confidence in familiar environments. Meetings initially took place in a coffee shop where she felt safe, and over time, she began to take small steps outside her comfort zone. She progressed from simply saying her order, to confidently ordering drinks for both her and mentor. These moments helped reinforce her belief that she could manage social situations successfully.
Amelia had no prior work experience. Together, we explored volunteering opportunities that matched her interests, and she is now volunteering at a local museum. This role has been both enjoyable and challenging, particularly in terms of communicating with clients, which continues to help her develop her interpersonal skills.
Amelia has also made progress in socialising and meeting new people, an area she previously found difficult. We helped her to participate in a variety of activities including admin workshops, mock interviews, games workshops, and wellbeing walks.
My mentor helped me to improve my confidence, and encouraged me to try new things and engage with others – Amelia
Amelia is now more self-assured, especially in her communication, and continues to volunteer at the museum. She is currently applying for another volunteer opportunity to further build her experience and confidence as she prepares for future employment.
