Max’s Story – Mentoring

Max* has been in foster care since the age of two, and has experienced frequent moves throughout his childhood. Max was referred to us via the Job Centre to help him find employment.

Max* finds social situations challenging, especially in new environments or with unfamiliar people. Due to his background in foster care, he has experienced significant trauma, with triggers including people shouting and children crying. He often feels anxious.

Max has benefited greatly from our one-to-one mentoring support. Having someone to talk to has helped him manage his emotions rather than bottling them up. He is close to his sister and friends too which also helps. Our mentors assisted Max in creating a CV, developing job search strategies and practicing mock interview questions. During this, he spoke about his trauma for the first time. We have been able to work together to help him process these emotions and understand the roots of his anger, which stem from both his past and present circumstances.

Max now has a daily routine which helps relieve his anxiety. He struggled with financial difficulties and now has continued support from the local food banks and community fridges.

Undoubtedly, life has been very difficult for Max. With the support of his mentor, he now sees a more hopeful future and understands that current problems may not last forever. He has begun to care for himself, including eating healthier, sleeping well and staying active, which have all had a positive impact on his mental health.

Life is beginning to take a more positive path for Max, he participates in wellbeing walks, games workshops, volunteering at a local community garden, and is actively seeking employment. He has also applied to retake his English GCSE – we wish him all the best.
