We were delighted to welcome the High Sheriff of Surrey, Mrs Joosje Hamilton DL, aboard our Swingbridge workboat, Endeavour, to experience first-hand how our nature-based programmes are helping people across Surrey build confidence, develop new skills and improve their wellbeing.
Joining two SCT volunteers and a team from Surrey Probation Service, the High Sheriff spent the day travelling along the River Wey from Dapdune Wharf to Burpham, where participants on the Community Payback scheme worked together to replace a damaged fence with a new post and rail barrier, helping to protect livestock from straying onto the A3.
In her reflections on the day, the High Sheriff recognised the wider impact of SCT’s work:
“The benefits of the SCT’s work are clear to see.”
She also highlighted how our programmes use nature-based activities, including boating, gardening and conservation, to support people facing challenges such as isolation, poor mental health, unemployment and low skills.
The visit offered a valuable opportunity to see how practical conservation projects not only improve the local environment but also give participants the chance to learn transferable skills, work as part of a team and build confidence. For those taking part in the Community Payback scheme, these projects provide an opportunity to make a positive contribution to their local communities while developing skills that can help reduce reoffending.
The High Sheriff embraced the experience herself, learning how to drive fence posts, operate a lock safely and even take the helm of Swingbridge Endeavour during part of the journey.
Reflecting on the day, she wrote:

At SCT, we know that meaningful activities in the outdoors can have a profound impact on people’s lives. Whether restoring the local environment, learning to work as a team or simply spending time on Surrey’s beautiful waterways, every activity is designed to help people realise their potential and build brighter futures.
We are grateful to the High Sheriff for taking the time to visit our Swingbridge Community Boats project and for recognising the positive difference it makes to individuals, communities and the environment.
